How Much Is a QP of Weed?

Understanding marijuana weights can be confusing. If you’re not a math whiz, it can be difficult to figure out how much weed to buy. Anyone new to marijuana might be wondering what the abbreviation “QP” means, and even more importantly, how much is a QP of weed.

QP, short for a quarter pound, is exactly that – it’s a quarter pound of marijuana. But this still requires some clarification, especially for newbies to the weed market.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything there is to know about weed amounts, including details on the common QP measurement.

What Is a QP/Quarter Pound of Marijuana?

In order to understand the QP measurement, it’s best to start with the basics of a pound.

There are 16 ounces in 1 pound of marijuana, and each ounce consists of 28 grams in weight. Weed is commonly weighed in ounces and/or grams. This information will be extremely helpful next time you make a weed purchase.

When you’re talking about a QP of weed, that is referring to a quarter of a pound, ¼ or 25% of a pound’s weight. Now that you know there are 16 ounces in a pound, figuring out how much weed is in a QP is pretty simple.

Start by dividing the amount in ounces – 16 – by a denomination of 4. This leaves you with 4 ounces, so you now know that a QP is a total of 4 ounces.

Want to know what that is in grams? Remember, every ounce consists of 28 grams, so just multiply 4×28 and you’re left with 112. That means your quarter pound of weed measures out to be 4 ounces, or if you want to break it down even further, 112 grams.

Is a QP of Weed a Lot?

If you don’t smoke weed too frequently, a QP is a lot. You can expect it to last you quite some time.

In terms of visuals, one QP can look completely different from another. Although all quarter pounds technically weigh the same when placed on a scale, the appearance depends on a few things, including plant strain and how tightly packed it is.

A QP of weed that is vacuum sealed in an airtight bag appears to be much smaller in quantity than a loosely packed QP. But as soon as you put either one on the scale, you’ll see that they weigh the same. At least as long as the dispensary isn’t trying to rip you off!

Is It Legal to Buy a Quarter Pound?

Whether you’re in Canada or the US, legalized weed areas only allow you to purchase 1 ounce at a time. That means you are not currently legally allowed to buy a QP at one time. If a source allows you to buy a QP, it’s probably not legit!

How Many Joints Can Be Rolled from a QP of Weed?

Depending on the amount of marijuana you use for a joint and your rolling method, you could roll more than 200 joints from a QP. Most people can roll 2 solid joints from 1 gram of weed. Since there are 112 grams in a QP, that’s well over 200.

How Much Does a QP of Weed Cost?

There are a lot of factors that determine the price of a QP. This includes the plant strain, the specific state you’re purchasing within, the dispensary, seasonal availability, demand, and tax laws.

In other words, prices are bound to fluctuate. Take the COVID-19 pandemic as an example. During this time, weed prices went sky-high because the demand for marijuana increased significantly. Dispensaries and state governments took advantage of this by charging more for every product.

Generally speaking, though, you can expect to pay about $400 per ounce of weed. Since a QP is equivalent to 4 ounces, that’s about $1600. Of course, this depends on the state. In Colorado where weed is highly legal, it’s possible to buy a QP for about $800.

Common Weight Offerings at Marijuana Dispensaries

The abbreviation QP isn’t the only confusing terminology used by dispensaries and budtenders. You’ll also hear words like eighth, zip, dime, and slice. If you’re new to this, it’s highly recommended to ask your local dispensary worker for some clarification.

So why do dispensaries portion their products out into different weight offerings? Well, it’s in the dispensary’s best interest to portion out products based on weight, giving customers plenty of options for how much to buy while also minimizing the amount of work involved before the check-out process.

Dispensaries consider the budgets of their customers as well as which weight offerings are in the highest demand. This is why so many products and strains are portioned out into eighths as well as grams; people often prefer to purchase weed in small quantities in order to save money.

Final Recap

Weed and marijuana-based products are becoming much more accepted around the world, including in plenty of states in the US. Before you head into a local dispensary, it’s vital that you know your measurements in ounces, grams, quarter pounds, etc.

Now that you know how much weed is in a QP, you should have a much better understanding of the marijuana measurement system. The key is to remember that 1 ounce is 28 grams, and since there are 16 ounces in a full pound, that leaves you with 112 grams in a QP.
