Tim Quilty, a Liberal Democratic Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council representing Northern Victoria, recently told the Parliament that it is time to legalize marijuana.
“We’ve watched the tidal wave of legalization washing across the U.S., and around the world. We can drag our heels for a few more years, continuing to persecute people for possessing a plant. Or, we can take the lead.”
Quilty continued, saying that “We will see a new agricultural industry emerge that will benefit the farmers of Northern Victoria.”
Currently, medicinal marijuana is not approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration, although qualifying patients can be prescribed cannabis by approved doctors through the Special Access Scheme. Additionally, clinical trials of the drug are underway in Australia and already have the backing of the Australian Medical Association.
That being said, Tony Bartone, president of the Australian Medical Association, warned that “It’s not a panacea, it’s not going to be the cure-all that some people think it will be, [but] we need to understand what its potential role is.”
